Trump Inaugural Committee Ordered to Hand Over Documents to Federal Investigators

Trump says it’s all a witch hunt

Federal prosecutors have sent a subpoena to the inauguration committee for President Donald Trump for financial records and other information, according to a report from the New York Times.

A spokesman for the inauguration committee said they intended to comply with the subpoena.

“We have just received a subpoena for documents,” said the spokesman to ABC News. “While we are still reviewing the subpoena, it is our intention to cooperate with the inquiry.”

Many critics of the president have noted that the inaugural committee raised a record $107 million for the event in January 2017, and yet they organized fewer and smaller events according to ABC News. The fundraising figure was more than twice as much as that for former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush.

Any donations to the inaugural fund from foreign individuals and businesses would be a violation of finance laws.

Special counsel Robert Mueller is also reportedly looking into the funding for the inauguration while conducting the investigation into Russian election interference and alleged collusion with the Trump campaign.

The deputy chairman of the inauguration committee, Rick Gates, has been cooperating with federal prosecutors. Mueller said in January that Gates was cooperating with “several ongoing investigations” when he sought to delay his sentencing.

Here’s the CNN video report about the news:
